16 December 2017 T20 GL Final The Wanderers

The first game of the Global League T20 will see the Cape Town Knight Riders take on the Pretoria Mavericks on November 3. This North-South derby will give the Global T20 League the explosive start it needs in the competition.

This will be followed by double-headers over the November 4-5 weekend. The Stellenbosch Monarchs take on the Johannesburg Giants and Durban Qalandars play the Nelson Mandela Bay Stars on the first Saturday while Pretoria Mavericks will be up against the Benoni Zalmis and Bloem Blazers host the Cape Town Knight Riders on Sunday.

There will be double-headers on every weekend, while there being breaks on November 13, November 20 and December 4 before heading into the final stretch stretch – i.e. the knock-out stages of the competition.

CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat had earlier informed that the Global League will be scheduled to be played between November 3 and December 16, 2017.

The eight new franchise owners have been announced for the first ever edition of the T20 Global League. Teams will be based out of Benoni, Bloemfontein, Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria and Stellenbosch. Shah Rukh Khan, Javed Afridi, Fawad Rana, GMR Group, Osman Osman, Ajay Sethi, Mustaq Brey and Sushil Kumar are the new team owners.

These new owners will now be allowed to pick up their players to form their squad, using either a Draft system (as is the case in the Pakistan Super League and the Caribbean Premier League), Auction (as is the case with the Indian Premier League) or a direct contractual signing (like in the Big Bash League).

In between all of this, Cricket South Africa will also be announcing the GLT20 schedule, but indications now are that the tournament will be played in the months of November and December.

That is also when the current South African T20 league is played, i.e. the Ram Slam T20 Challenge.

More information on these T20 GL schedule will be available in the months to come but according to the latest reports, CSA will host the tournament in November-December 2017 with the final slated to be held on December 16 (a public holiday) at Wanderers, Johannesburg.

Haroon Lorgat, the CSA CEO said: “We have committed to hosting a final at The Wanderers every year. That is fixed, and we will always work backwards to the start date.”

“This year that is November 3, and we want to keep it (the final) that way.”

The league will be hosted by eight cricket grounds in South Africa which include Boland Park, Mangaung Oval, Kingsmead, Newlands, Willowmoore Park, SuperSport Park, St. Georges Park and the New Wanderers Stadium.

Incidentally, what this means is that this tournament could now clash with the tournaments like the Big Bash League and New Zealand’s Super Smash T20 which could lead to scheduling conflicts and in turn it remains to be seen whether the South African cricket board will be able to attract the top players from around the world. The South Africa T20 Global League 2017 fixtures is released and placed above.
